Overview

1   Visit Street Festivals and Fairs

We're not talking about Oktoberfest in Munich or Carnival in Brazil, but local city festivals. You will get to know the city and its people at their most fun, taste local specialties and dive right into the traditions. Ask about festivals and events when you arrive, or check the city's website.

2   Walk in the Park

There are so many famous parks worldwide, and that's not without reason because parks combine recreation, nature, people, sports, fun, and leisure. We visit as many parks as we can in every city and admire the colorful hustle and bustle, walk around, and enjoy the atmosphere in every season because every park has its own magic, even in winter.

3   Go on a Free Walking Tour

Most cities offer free walking tours. This allows you to discover the most important sights and their history. On top of that, you often get to see a large part of the city and can ask the tour guide for his top tips. Your guide will be happy about a small tip, but it is not necessary. There are now also some apps to explore the cities, although it is definitely more fun together with other tourists and in the fresh air.

4   Let Yourself Drift

Without a city map, without a destination, without time pressure – just let yourself drift. It may be a little unusual at first, but it'll wear off after a while. Because while you're simply walking through the city, you'll discover a lot. Colorful houses, a beautiful church, a small café that hasn't changed in decades, and a tailor with colorful costumes hanging in his shop window.
You can also increase the radius and drift around the city center. If you're afraid of missing something, plan half a day for it. Visit all the sights first and then walk around haphazardly and relaxed; you will be amazed at how wonderfully relaxing and exciting it can be.

5   Visit Temples, Churches, Cathedrals, and Mosques

You don't have to be a believer to visit these beautiful buildings. Step inside, respectfully, and just let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of these buildings. The way how the sun shines through the colorful windows, the unique paintings and decorations on the walls and ceilings. So much love has gone into them. Enjoy the sight and the silence – because even that is sometimes wonderful.

6   Visit the Local Markets

If you want to really get to know the city, its atmosphere, delicacies, and inhabitants, there is no better place than the local market. All the different scents are flooding the air, and there are all kinds of delicacies to try. Between fruits and vegetables, cheese and handicrafts, wonderful everyday life takes place, and on top, lovely small talk (chit-chat) and insider tips here. Such a visit to the market always has a great culinary factor for us.

7   Off to the Museum

Many museums offer free admission one day a week or a heavily discounted one. Especially when the weather is terrible, museums and art galleries are a fantastic idea and change of pace. It doesn't always have to be art; there are also museums about computers, dinosaurs, cars, the respective city and its history, and interactive museums. We spent the whole day in a museum more than once and didn't see everything.

8   Picnics

You have to eat anyway, so why not have it as a picnic. Whether it's on a blanket in the park, on the fountain wall, or on a bench by the riverbank. Whether you have a whole basket of goodies or a sandwich from home. Picnics are also about conscious and relaxed time, where you eat comfortably and enjoy the hustle and bustle around you. Enjoy it!

9   Want to go Geocaching?

For kids' birthday parties, we sometimes had a scavenger hunt. You can still experience this excitement and thrill today and discover completely new corners. Practically a kind of discovery tour with rewards and hiding places exist worldwide. A fantastic and different way to get to know a city, and even more so with children or groups.

10   Hiking Through Nature

Admittedly rarely possible in a city unless you count the up and down in San Francisco as hiking; a little outside, you can always find a great hike. Just being in nature a bit and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city is good. And often rewarded with a fantastic view. Do not forget sunscreen, cell phone, and water, no matter where and how long it should go. Whether short or long, more or less steep, you can quickly check online beforehand.
