What to Expect
The importance of the battle won by Che Guevara, and his fighters for the revolution, becomes clear when you visit Santa Clara. Throughout the city, you will find statues of Che Guevara.
The Mausoleum and Plaza de la Revolución was dedicated to Che and his fighters. An imposing statue shows him in military dress, and with a rifle in its base is engraved his farewell letter to Fidel.
Under the statue of Che is the museum where you can learn everything about Che's life, and in the mausoleum rest his bones and those of 29 other guerrillas. Opposite the museum burns an eternal flame in memory of the fallen soldiers of the revolution, called “Garden of Tombs.” Each of the 200 marble tombs symbolizes one of Che's soldiers.
The Train Monument is practically the symbol of Cuba's freedom. History was made here on December 29, 1958. Che Guevara and his group captured an armored train full of ammunition for the enemy. The train derailed as Che leveled 30 meters of railroad tracks with a bulldozer.
This was the most important hit for the revolutionaries and heralded victory over Batista and his army. You can visit the original wagons and the bulldozer and get a deep dive into the history.

What a vision, shared faith, and courage can achieve, you can see in Santa Clara more intensively than anywhere else. History has changed an entire country forever. If you don't speak Spanish, be sure to book a guided tour, as all the explanatory panels are in Spanish only. A guide will explain everything and can give you a lot of background information and answer your questions. The mausoleum is not always open, and if you want to visit it, you should book your tour a few days in advance.

Duration:
Different tours go from 2 to 8 hours. To see all the highlights of the revolution and history, you should plan at least 2 hours. More time is always better.
Cost:
There are even free tours, but be sure to plan for tips for your guide and entrance fees.
Self-Organized
You can visit the sights and monuments without a tour. Pay attention to the opening hours of the mausoleum, as it is closed on Mondays and open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am - 5 pm. Photography and filming are not allowed inside the mausoleum.
