What to Expect on the Lanikai Pillbox Hike
Located on the east coast of Oahu, the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail, also known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail, promises an exciting adventure and breathtaking views. This popular hiking trail offers outdoor enthusiasts the chance to reach the ridge summit and enjoy panoramic views of turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and lush landscapes.
Lace up your shoes, prepare for an adrenaline-filled experience, and conquer the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail for an unforgettable journey into Oahu’s natural beauty. A true hidden gem for those wanting to catch an unparalleled sunrise.
- Tip: To see the full sunrise, start at least 40 minutes before sunrise
There are two trailheads: the more popular one is at Kaelepulu Drive, the other at Kamahale Street. Both are well marked and easy to find, but they start in residential areas without public parking.
You must park in the neighborhood and strictly follow parking rules, as tickets can be issued even early in the morning. Both trails are about 1.8 miles (2.9 km) long and climb approximately 623 feet (190 m). The paths are not paved or heavily marked, but a clear trail is visible.
One highlight of the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail is the stunning panoramic view that unfolds as you near the summit. As you ascend, you’ll see the sparkling Pacific Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see. The Mokulua Islands, also called the “Mokes,” floating in the vast ocean, add a touch of ethereal beauty. Let yourself be enchanted by the shimmering blues and the endless horizon.
The trail’s alternative name, Lanikai Pillbox Trail, comes from the military bunkers lining the ridge. These concrete bunkers served as observation posts during World War II and are now popular landmarks along the trail. Take time to explore these historic remnants – they also make a unique photo backdrop and add a touch of historical fascination.
You can also pass by the bunker and explore the quieter part of the trail, where additional fantastic photo spots are hidden. From here, you get a great view of the Koolau Mountain Range.
- Tip: Bring swimwear and visit the beautiful Lanikai Beach after your hike
It’s important to be prepared for the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail adventure: wear sturdy shoes, bring enough water, and protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and a hat. The trail can be steep in places, so take your time during the ascent.

Our Honest Review & Rating
The Lanikai Pillbox Trail is steep at the start but short overall, making it completely doable. Whether you start from the north or west side, the trail is rocky and partially unpaved. But the view makes it all worthwhile. No matter what time you hike the trail, the vistas are always absolutely spectacular.
During rain, outdoor excursions are usually less enjoyable. This trail becomes very muddy and slippery, so it’s not recommended. You also won’t see anything at the top except clouds and rain. The trail is steep and rocky, with no paved paths or railings, and is absolutely not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. We have seen children and dogs on the trail – this decision is fully up to each individual.

Is the Pillbox Hike Worth It?
For us, it was an absolute yes, especially for that iconic coastal view. It’s a short, steep, and fun scramble that delivers one of the most breathtaking coastal views on the entire island. It's famous for a reason.
Here’s our take on who will absolutely love the Pillbox Hike:
- Sunrise Chasers: This is arguably the best sunrise spot on Oahu. Watching the sun come up over the twin Mokulua Islands and light up the turquoise waters of Lanikai Beach is a truly magical experience we’ll never forget
- Photographers and Instagrammers: The view from the graffiti-covered pillboxes is one of Oahu's most iconic photo ops. It's the perfect place to capture that stunning panoramic shot of the windward coast.
- Hikers Looking for a Quick, Rewarding Climb: The hike is short (usually under an hour round trip) but steep enough to feel like a real workout. It's the perfect way to get your heart pumping and be rewarded with an epic view without dedicating your whole day to a hike.
On the other hand, it might not be the right fit if:
- You are not comfortable with steep, slippery trails. The path is unpaved, and the initial ascent is very steep with loose dirt. We saw people slipping even on a dry day. Proper shoes with good grip are a must, not flip-flops.
- You hate dealing with difficult parking. This is the biggest downside. There is no official parking lot, and you have to find street parking in a residential neighborhood where restrictions are strictly enforced. It can be a frustrating start to the hike.
Our Final Word:
The parking situation is a genuine hassle, but the view is 1000% worth it. For us, watching that sunrise was a core memory of our trip. Just be respectful of the neighborhood, wear good shoes, and get ready for one of the best views of your life.

What to Pack & Prepare
Lanikai Pillbox Hike: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Where is the best place to park for the hike?
Parking is the biggest challenge for this hike. There is no designated parking lot. You must find street parking in the surrounding residential Lanikai neighborhood. Be extremely respectful of the residents: park legally, do not block driveways, keep noise to a minimum (especially for sunrise hikes), and pay close attention to all posted parking signs to avoid a hefty ticket. It's often easier to park in Kailua town and walk or bike the extra distance to the trailhead.
How difficult is the Lanikai Pillbox hike?
This hike is considered moderate. While it's relatively short (under 2 miles / 3.2 kilometers round trip), the initial climb is very steep and involves scrambling over dirt and rocks. There are ropes in some sections to help you pull yourself up. Once you reach the first pillbox, the trail along the ridge becomes much more manageable. Proper footwear with good grip is essential as the dry, loose dirt can be very slippery.
Is it worth hiking for sunrise?
Absolutely! The Lanikai Pillbox hike is arguably the most famous sunrise hike on Oahu, and for good reason. Watching the sun come up over the turquoise waters of Lanikai and the Mokulua Islands from one of the pillboxes is a truly magical and unforgettable experience. If you plan to go for sunrise, be sure to bring a headlamp or use your phone's flashlight for the initial dark ascent.
