What to Expect on the Manoa Falls Trail
The Manoa Falls Trail is a truly unique hiking path in the lush Manoa Valley. Nestled in a tropical rainforest, this trail to the Manoa Falls is one of the most popular hikes on Oahu. Unlike many other trails, it is mostly shaded.
Right from the start, you are greeted by an awe-inspiring sight: you are standing in the middle of a rainforest that feels like stepping back into the Stone Age. Towering, majestic trees with enormous, breathtaking canopies surround the trail. You may recognize the setting, as the Manoa Falls Trail has been featured in Hollywood films, including Jurassic Park and Lost.
- Tip: Movie fan? Also visit the famous Kualoa Ranch, the backdrop for over 80 blockbuster films!
Daily rainfall keeps the valley pleasantly humid and often creates beautiful rainbows – which is why the valley is nicknamed “Rainbow Valley”. However, the rain can make the trail muddy, so be sure to wear shoes with good traction. At the bamboo grove, take the small detour through the bamboo – it’s slightly longer but much less muddy, and walking among the bamboo is a magical experience.
After roughly 45 minutes of hiking, the last 330 ft (100 m) are the steepest, but entirely manageable. At the waterfall, you may be greeted by either a roaring cascade or a gentle trickle, depending on recent rainfall. Even if the 148 ft (45 m) high waterfall is only a small stream during your visit, the trail and surrounding scenery more than make up for it.
- Important: Even though there are warning signs, stay back from the waterfall and do not swim!
Falling rocks can be dangerous, and standing water may carry diseases such as leptospirosis. The Manoa Valley is also home to wildlife, so don’t be surprised if you encounter chameleons or mongooses. Many fascinating birds, like Java sparrows and mynas, can also be spotted. Early mornings are especially peaceful, with the sound of birdsong accompanying your hike.
- Tip: At the Treetops Restaurant, there’s a hose to rinse your shoes after the hike – and you can enjoy snacks and shave ice.

Our Honest Review & Rating
The Manoa Falls Trail is an incredibly beautiful hike: the trail itself, the trees, and the waterfall are all breathtaking. For us, it’s one of the most stunning hikes in this unique setting. The first steps leave you speechless – a true wow moment. Even if the waterfall is only a trickle, it doesn’t detract from the experience at all.
In rain, outdoor excursions are generally less enjoyable. Since you are in a rainforest, expect some wet ground. The trail includes a few rocks to climb, and although the hike is considered easy, don’t underestimate slippery sections due to mud. The trail is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Is the Manoa Falls Trail Worth It?
For us, it was a definite yes, but more for the journey than the destination. The waterfall itself can be a bit underwhelming if there hasn't been much rain, but the experience of walking through that incredible rainforest is what makes it truly special.
Here’s our take on who will absolutely love the Manoa Falls Trail:
- Movie Buffs and Jurassic Park Fans: Walking through the giant ferns and under the canopy of ancient trees, we totally felt like we were on the set of Jurassic Park (because parts of it were filmed here!). The prehistoric, jungle-like atmosphere is absolutely magical.
- Hikers Who Prefer Shade: This is one of the few popular hikes on Oahu that is almost entirely shaded. The dense canopy keeps you cool, making it a great option for a midday hike when other trails would be too hot.
- Anyone Looking for a Lush, Tropical Experience: The trail is a feast for the senses. The air is cool and smells of earth and flowers, and the sounds of the forest are all around you. It's a fully immersive rainforest experience just minutes from Honolulu.
On the other hand, it might not be the right fit if:
- You absolutely hate mud. The Manoa Valley is a rainforest, and the trail is almost always muddy and slippery. We saw people in flip-flops really struggling. You need to wear proper shoes and be prepared to get them dirty.
- Your only goal is to see a massive, roaring waterfall. The waterfall's flow is completely dependent on recent rainfall. Sometimes it's a powerful cascade, and other times like at our visit it's just a gentle trickle. If the waterfall is your only reason for going, you might be disappointed.
Our Final Word:
Go for the incredible rainforest walk, and consider the waterfall a bonus. The magical, jungle-like atmosphere of the trail itself is what makes this hike so memorable. We loved it and think it's a must-do for the unique environment alone.

Manoa Falls Trail: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can you swim in the pool at the base of Manoa Falls?
No, swimming at Manoa Falls is strictly prohibited and highly discouraged. There are clear warning signs posted. The primary dangers are the risk of falling rocks from the cliff face above and the potential for contracting leptospirosis, a bacterial infection found in many freshwater streams in Hawaii. It's best to admire the beauty of the 150-foot waterfall from the safety of the viewing area.
How muddy does the trail actually get?
The Manoa Valley is one of the wettest spots on Oahu, so you should always expect the trail to be muddy. After a recent rainfall, it can become extremely slippery and messy. The trail has been significantly improved with gravel in many sections, which helps a lot, but muddy patches are almost unavoidable. Wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty is essential.
What makes this hike so special if the waterfall isn't always flowing strongly?
While the waterfall is the destination, the true magic of this hike is the journey itself. The trail takes you through an incredible tropical rainforest filled with giant ferns, towering banyan trees, and a magical bamboo grove.
The lush, prehistoric scenery is why it was chosen as a filming location for movies like Jurassic Park. The feeling of being completely immersed in this vibrant, living jungle is what makes the Manoa Falls Trail an unforgettable experience, regardless of how much water is flowing.
