What to Expect on the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail

The Makapuʻu Lighthouse stands tall on a dramatic coastal cliff along Oʻahu’s southeastern shore, serving as both a historical sentinel and a symbol of the island’s stunning beauty. This iconic landmark offers a perfect blend of panoramic views, rugged landscapes, and insight into Oʻahu’s maritime heritage.

The trail is easy to hike and rewards visitors with breathtaking views of Koko Head, the scenic coastline of Makapuʻu Beach, and the windward shore. On clear days, you can spot the neighboring islands of Molokaʻi and Lanaʻi, which are bird sanctuaries. A special highlight: from November to May, humpback whales pass by this area.

Despite its name, the trail doesn’t lead directly to the lighthouse. Instead, it takes you up a hill, with the lighthouse positioned to the side—an interesting quirk. After a shipwreck on a nearby reef in 1903, the lighthouse was constructed in 1909.

According to Hawaiian legend, Makapuʻu was once home to a goddess with glowing eyes—hence the name Makapuʻu Lighthouse. It is still operational today and features the largest lens of any U.S. lighthouse. Since 1977, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a historic landmark in its own right.

Right past the humpback whale information sign, a loose path leads down to the Makapuʻu Tide Pools and the blowhole. The descent is steep, with loose gravel, so proceed with caution.

Follow the white arrows (even though they point upward) to find the path down. At the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with crystal-clear tide pools; the larger ones are safe for swimming, but only with extreme care. The blowhole is fascinating, but exercise caution here as well.

Back on the official trail: there is no shade along the entire hike, so it’s best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Temperatures are cooler then, and the sun is less intense.

What to Pack & Prepare

Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the entire Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail paved and stroller-friendly?

Yes, the main trail to the lookout is completely paved, making it one of the most accessible scenic hikes on Oahu. It's an excellent choice for families with strollers and is also manageable for those in wheelchairs, though some of the inclines can be steep. The path is wide and well-maintained all the way to the top.

Can you actually go into the lighthouse?

No, the Makapuʻu Lighthouse itself is not open to the public. The trail leads to lookout points high above the lighthouse, providing a fantastic vantage point for photos of the historic structure and the dramatic coastline. The lighthouse is still an active navigation aid managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, so access to the building itself is restricted.

Is it safe to go down to the Makapuʻu Tide Pools?

The path down to the tide pools is an unofficial, unmaintained trail that branches off the main paved path. It is very steep and consists of loose rock and gravel, making it a challenging and potentially dangerous descent. It should only be attempted by experienced hikers with proper footwear.

Once at the tide pools, be extremely cautious of the ocean. Never turn your back on the waves, as rogue waves can and do sweep over the rocks unexpectedly. Swimming is only safe on the calmest of days.
