Our Honest Review & Rating
A walk through the unique and fragrant Koko Crater Botanical Garden is an unforgettable experience. The loop trail stretches for about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) and guides you through a stunning, one-of-a-kind environment. No surprise that the garden is also a popular spot for weddings and special ceremonies. At the entrance, you’ll find a black information box with brochures to help guide your visit and provide additional insights.
The garden is open year-round and is worth visiting in every season. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes, as the loose gravel can be slippery in some areas. The trail is only partially accessible for strollers or wheelchairs, since the path is dusty and unpaved.

Is Koko Crater Botanical Garden Worth It?
For us, it was a yes, but with a specific recommendation. It’s a really unique and surprisingly beautiful walk, but we think it’s best treated as a companion visit to the more famous Koko Crater Trail, not as a standalone destination.
Here’s our take on who will absolutely love Koko Crater Botanical Garden:
- Cactus and Desert Plant Lovers: This isn't your typical lush, tropical Hawaiian garden. It's a dry-land garden filled with fascinating cacti, succulents, and plumeria trees from arid regions around the world. We thought the variety of strange and wonderful plants was super cool.
- Anyone Looking for an Easy, Uncrowded Walk: The 2-mile loop trail is mostly flat and very peaceful. We saw only a handful of other people. It's a great spot for a quiet stroll and to see a different side of Oahu's flora.
- Hikers of the Koko Crater Trail: If you've just conquered the brutal Koko Crater stairs, this garden is the perfect, gentle cool-down. It’s right next door and offers a beautiful, relaxing walk to stretch your tired legs.
On the other hand, it might not be the right fit if:
- You're expecting a classic, lush tropical garden. If you want that dense, jungle-like rainforest vibe, you should go to Lyon Arboretum or Manoa Falls instead. This garden is hot, dry, and desert-like.
- You're short on time. We enjoyed it, but if we had to choose just one major botanical garden to visit on the island, this wouldn't be our top pick. Ho'omaluhia or Waimea Valley offer more dramatic and varied landscapes.
Our Final Word:
We really enjoyed it as a quiet and unique contrast to the rest of the island. It’s a lovely, free attraction. We’d especially recommend it if you're already in the area for Hanauma Bay or the Koko Crater Trail.

Koko Crater Botanical Garden: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is the Koko Crater Botanical Garden the same as the Koko Head Crater Trail (Stairs)?
No, they are two completely different attractions located in the same area. It's a very common point of confusion.
The Koko Crater Botanical Garden is an easy, relatively flat 2-mile loop walk inside the crater basin, featuring desert plants and plumeria groves.
The Koko Head Crater Trail is an extremely strenuous and steep climb up the outside of the crater, involving over 1,000 old railway ties that act as stairs.
Make sure you navigate to the correct location based on the experience you are looking for!
What is the best time of year to visit the garden?
The Koko Crater Botanical Garden is beautiful year-round, but the most spectacular time to visit is during the plumeria blooming season, which typically runs from late spring through summer (around May to August). During this period, the plumeria grove is filled with hundreds of fragrant, colorful blossoms, creating an unforgettable sensory experience.
The cactus and succulent collections are impressive at any time of year. A visit in the morning is recommended to avoid the hottest part of the day, as the garden is located in one of Oahu's driest and sunniest areas.
Are there restrooms and water available at the garden?
There are portable toilets located near the entrance of the garden. However, there are no water fountains or places to purchase drinks. It is essential to bring your own water, especially since the trail is unshaded and the climate is very dry and hot. Pack more water than you think you will need.
