Ocho Rios – From Fishing Village to Nature Adventure Paradise
“Ochi” has adapted perfectly to this. You will find the first small outdoor shopping mall, and many more stores follow the more you go into town. You will definitely find something here from exquisite stores with famous brands, traditional handicrafts, or colorful souvenirs.
You won't find any historical buildings or museums here, and as soon as you leave the tourist part of the city, you will dive into the real-life of the inhabitants. Everything seems a bit more chaotic and disorganized, but on the other hand, it radiates a fascinating disorder. You don't visit Ocho Rios for the sake of the city, but for the huge variety of outdoor activities.
You'll also find the Dunn's River waterfalls here, which you can actually climb up. Mother Nature has truly created them in a staircase shape, and it's great fun to climb from the end to the beginning. By the way, it's one of the few waterfalls that end in the ocean.
Or soar over treetops on a chairlift and race through the jungle in a bobsled. Pure adrenaline! You can enjoy the city panorama from the infinity pool or the restaurant to relax. Did you know Jamaica has a bobsled team and is in the Winter Olympics?
And if you've ever wondered what it's like to swim in glowing water – here you actually have the opportunity! Please, how crazy is that? There are tiny microorganisms living in the water, and your movement makes them feel disturbed, and then they glow so fascinatingly.
And there are gorgeous beaches for sunbathing and also famous for water sports. If you still have enough energy in the evening, you can go dancing in one of the bars or clubs.

What to Eat in Ocho Rios: A Taste of the North Coast
Ocho Rios is a bustling hub of activity, and its food scene reflects this energy. While the cruise port has brought many international options, the real culinary magic happens when you follow a simple rule: eat where the locals eat.
From legendary fast food to fresh beachside snacks, here’s how to taste the authentic flavors of Ochi.
1. Jamaican Patties: The Ultimate Grab-and-Go Meal
For a quick, delicious, and authentically Jamaican meal on the go, nothing beats a Jamaican patty. These flaky, golden pastries are typically filled with spiced ground beef, chicken, or vegetables. Ocho Rios has several famous local chains like Juici Patties or Tastee Patties.
Grabbing a hot patty and a cold drink is the perfect way to refuel between exploring Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole.
2. Fresh Seafood Right by the Sea
Being a vibrant coastal town, Ocho Rios offers fantastic fresh seafood. Look for small, local restaurants along the beaches that serve the catch of the day.
A must-try is escovitch fish – a whole fried fish smothered in a tangy pickle of onions, carrots, and peppers. Enjoying it with a view of the Caribbean Sea is a quintessential Ochi experience.
3. Authentic Jerk from a "Jerk Centre"
While you'll find jerk stands all over Jamaica, Ocho Rios is known for its dedicated “Jerk Centres” – lively, casual spots that specialize in this smoky, spicy style of cooking.
Here, chicken and pork are slow-cooked over pimento wood to perfection. It's a fantastic place to soak up the local atmosphere and enjoy one of Jamaica's most famous culinary exports.
4. Local Sips: Coffee, Coconut & Beer
Blue Mountain Coffee at Mystic Mountain: After riding the bobsled, there's no better way to relax than with a cup of authentic Blue Mountain Coffee at the mountaintop restaurant, enjoying the stunning panoramic views over Ocho Rios.
Fresh Coconut Water on the Beach: Don't miss the chance to buy a fresh, chilled coconut from a beach vendor. They'll chop it open with a machete right in front of you. It's the most refreshing and hydrating drink you can have under the Jamaican sun.
A Cold Red Stripe: End a day of adventure with Jamaica’s iconic beer, a crisp and refreshing Red Stripe, at a local bar while listening to reggae music.
